Twenty Two Juicery & Smoothie Bar has become well known around downtown as the best place to go for delicious smoothies, fresh juices, and the incredibly popular açaí bowls! We talked to Twenty Two Juice co-founder Ross Hanna about his background, his love of açaí bowls, and why they are so delicious!
What’s your background? Where’d you grow up, where’d you go to school?
Grew up in Crawfordsville, Indiana, went to Crawfordsville High School, and graduated from Ball State University in 2008 with a degree in finance. I currently reside in Fishers, Indiana, with my wife (Leslie), my son (Theo), soon-to-be-born-daughter (Elle) and my Havanese (Dot)!
What sort of products does Twenty Two Juicery & Smoothie Bar offer?
We provide açaí bowls, superfood smoothies, fresh juice and tantalizing banter.
For those who haven’t had them before, what are açaí bowls?
An açaí bowl is a smoothie bowl consisting of three parts:
1) The smoothie “base”.
2) Hemp granola.
3) Fresh fruit & local honey.
As an example, the “base” of our most popular açaí bowl – the Traditional Bowl – consists of 100% pure açaí, frozen bananas and unsweetened almond milk. These three ingredients are then blended to create a thick & creamy smoothie-like consistency. This “base” is then poured into a 20oz. bowl and topped with hemp granola, fresh fruit & local honey. Finally, the açaí bowl is eaten with spoon and enjoyed as a healthy meal-replacement.
How did you get into doing juices, smoothies, açaí bowls? And how did you get your start inside the Indy City Market?
Like a lot of our friends, we began juicing and making green smoothies at home back in 2010. Leslie and I got married and honeymooned in Maui, Hawaii, in 2012. It was there that we first learned about (and consumed) açaí bowls. Like almost everyone else, we were hooked immediately! Upon returning to Indianapolis, we quickly realized that nobody was selling açaí bowls (or a decent smoothie), so we decided to turn this opportunity into business. Very soon after, Twenty Two Juicery & Smoothie Bar was created (from a restored 1964 Shasta Airflyte camper trailer, nonetheless)!
Stevi Kersh offered Leslie and I an open spot within the City Market after noticing us in our mobile juice & smoothie trailer in Broad Ripple (at the 2013 WARMFest).
What sort of ingredients do you to use, and why?
We use a variety of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables for all of our menu items. We receive deliveries on a daily basis – ensuring freshness – and try to obtain local produce whenever possible.
Most of your products are vegetarian and vegan friendly, correct?
All of our products are vegan-friendly, except for our local honey.
What is your favorite item on the menu – the one thing you think people HAVE to try?
I have no favorites! I really do love everything on our menu! However, our açaí bowls are the most popular menu items (specifically, the Traditional Bowl).

What’s next for you and Twenty Two Juice? Anything new on the horizon?
We are wrapping-up our time as a vendor at the Fishers Farmers Market. From May through September, we have exclusively sold our Traditional Açaí Bowl, and have experienced a great amount of positive feedback. Therefore, Leslie and I are no discussing the possibility of opening a second Twenty Two Juicery & Smoothie Bar in Fishers in the near future!
