The Original Farmers' Market Returns for 21st SeasonApril 3, 2018
Join us for the 21st season of downtown Indy's Original Farmers' Market, held at the Indianapolis City Market each Wednesday from May through October, 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.!
Cold weather is making way for warmer days, the sun is rising earlier, farmers are making their way into the fields to prepare for another growing season, and the 21st season of the Original Farmers’ Market at the Indianapolis City Market is less than five weeks away. Located outside of the Indianapolis City Market on Market Street, between Delaware and Alabama streets, the Original Farmers’ Market provides Indy residents, workers, and visitors the opportunity to purchase fresh produce, frozen meats, eggs, flowers, and more! The Original Farmers’ Market takes place every Wednesday, May through Oct., from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“Since 1998, the Original Farmers’ Market has provided quality products from local farmers and producers for all those who inhabit Indianapolis. Our vendors offer a large selection of everything from fresh produce, to baked goods.” said Stevi Stoesz, executive director of the Indianapolis City Market. “Programs that we offer such as SNAP, Fresh Bucks, and Gleaning Foods Program allows us to provide quality products to those who need it the most while supporting some Indiana’s best small businesses.”
The Original Farmers’ Market gives many of Indiana’s local food and farming communities the opportunity to sell their unique products in a lively, diverse, family friendly atmosphere, all while supporting other small Indiana businesses.
As we approach the 21st year of the Original Farmers’ Market, the City Market is ecstatic to continue various placemaking and space activation projects to encourage new patrons to visit the historic site. Young professionals, locals, and families visit the market daily to grab a quick bite, network, purchase fresh produce, and explore the City Market’s unique merchants.
Dollar-For-Dollar Matching: Fresh Bucks & SNAP
For those who utilize SNAP benefits, you will be able to once again double your spending up to $20 through the Fresh Bucks program. SNAP users can utilize this program to buy fruits, vegetables, honey, herbs and spices, maple syrup, and seedlings for edible plants. The program’s expansion in 2015 was made possible by a Specialty Crop Block Grant awarded by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture in 2014.
This year the Original Farmers’ Market will welcome nine new vendors to the Original Farmers’ Market family. These new vendors include Barnhouse Farms, Circle City Kombucha, Daniel’s Vineyard, Generations Pie Company, Hertensteins Hops, Herbs, & Honey, Love & Cobbler, Naptown Flo, and SonShine Kombucha.
Programs and Activities
The gleaning foods program Buy 2 Give 1, administered through the Original Farmers’ Market, encourages individuals to buy additional products for those who are in need of fresh, healthy products. All of the donations are made at the City Market tent (located in front of the City Market House’s Market Street doors) during the Original Farmers’ Market hours, and are given to one of three downtown homeless missions to prepare healthy meals for those in need. Each year, thousands of pounds of produce are given to those who need it most through the gleaning foods program; approximately 4,300 pounds of produce was gleaned throughout the 2017 Original Farmers’ Market season.
Farmers’ Market Music – During the Original Farmers’ Market, live entertainment can be found on The Sun King Stage, located on the City Market’s Whistler (West) Plaza, every farmers’ market day from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
