20th Anniversary Season of The Original Farmers' MarketApril 12, 2017
The Original Farmers' Market returns to downtown Indy on May 3 for a special 20th anniversary season.
The last chills of a mild winter are finally fading away as farmers around the state prepare for another growing season, and another season for farmers’ markets. The longer days and warmer weather in Indianapolis also mean City Market officials are preparing to kick off another season of The Original Farmers’ Market, but this is no ordinary season. When vendors open for business at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, it will mark the start of the Original Farmers’ Market’s 20th anniversary season of selling fresh produce, artisan Indiana foods, and other products.
“We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate 20 years of the Original Farmers’ Market! Bring your bags and appetites on May 3, and every Wednesday through October 25. Our vendors will have a huge selection of fresh produce, frozen meats, eggs, cheeses, flowers, baked goods, and so much more!” said Stevi Stoesz, executive director of the Indianapolis City Market. “We had a record number of vendor applications this year and we are looking forward to working with them to put on this special anniversary season, celebrating Indiana agriculture and Indiana products.”
Each season, the Original Farmers’ Market works to promote Indiana’s local food and farming communities by providing a fun, lively, family friendly atmosphere for small family farmers and local producers to sell their products.
With the 20th anniversary season of the Original Farmers’ Market, the Indianapolis City Market is excited to share special placemaking and space activation projects with the community. These projects will help make the City Market a more engaging and comfortable destination for residents and visitors to Indianapolis.
Dollar-For-Dollar Matching: Fresh Bucks & SNAP
Those who use SNAP benefits will again be able to double their spending power up to $20 through the Fresh Bucks program. SNAP users can use this program to buy Indiana-native fruits, vegetables, honey, herbs and spices, maple syrup, and seedlings for edible plants. The program’s expansion in 2015 was made possible by a Specialty Crop Block Grant awarded by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture in 2014, which continues this year.
This year the Original Farmers’ Market will welcome 11 new vendors to the OFM family, including Artisan Picnic, Mallow Run Winery, Blackhawk Winery & Vineyard, American Mushroom & Spice Co., Chef Bricker’s Brick House Vinaigrettes, Grace & Truth Flower Farms, Devil’s Ridge Flower Farm, Pots & Pans, Dragonwood, and The Fitness Farm.
