Every Wednesday (rain or shine), May through October, early in the morning until mid-afternoon, approximately 50 farmers set out in their trucks, transporting precious cargo-their fresh-picked, Indiana-grown bounty. Where are the farmers going? Their destination is The Indianapolis Farmers' Market at the Indianapolis City Market.
The farmers bring an irresistible abundance of nutritious food from the region: green lettuces, purple and white eggplants, red and yellow peppers, golden squash, yellow and white sweet corn, red raspberries, green and red tomatoes and a great deal more. Additionally, there are plentiful prepared foods-producers turning their fresh products into jams, pesto, honey, syrups, baked goods and hand-made crafts, just to name a few!
The Indianapolis Farmers' Market is an essential mainstay for farmers and city dwellers alike. The largest and most diverse outdoor farmers' market in the city, The Indianapolis Farmers' Market has bolstered the economy and influenced how people shop for fresh foods.
The Indianapolis Farmers' Market is also a vibrant neighborhood meeting place. Each week hundreds of Indianapolis and vicinity residents, office workers, homemakers, artists and chefs shop side-by-side on Market Street, choosing from hundreds of varieties of delicious fruits, garden-fresh vegetables, beautiful bedding plants, dazzling fresh-cut flowers and other fresh-picked products while listening to live local musicians.
